As part of our vision to enhance the physical and social well-being of our community, the Igbo Union Yorkshire (IUY) CIC organises an annual Sports Fun Day event aimed at bringing families together, fostering connections, and reducing social isolation and loneliness. This event provides a safe space for our seniors and vulnerable members living with chronic conditions.
The IUY Sports Fun Day 2025 took place on August 16 at Beeston Park, Leeds, and was officially opened by the former Mayor of Leeds, Cllr. Asghar Khan, accompanied by Cllrs. Luke Farley and Nkele Manaka. These councillors have been great sponsors over the years, and we were delighted to have them present.
The event featured a family barbecue, as well as a variety of activities that encouraged participants to reminisce about cultural folklore. Attendees enjoyed music, board games, sack races, egg-and-spoon races, tug-of-war, and bouncy castles for the children.
The event was free for everyone, drawing individuals from outside our community who wanted to experience African culture. This highlighted our commitment to cultural inclusivity and intergenerational networking, creating a vibrant celebration that brought people together across all backgrounds and ages.
